Thou Shall Not Kill
It’s said that the Devil is in the details. The Muse wonders if TV Bible huckster Jimmy Swaggart ever bothered to read the fine print on his contract with Christianity.
In case you missed, Swaggart went on a televised homophobic rant earlier this month when asked if he’d ever coveted a dude. He righteously declared: “I’m going to be blunt and plain: If one ever looks at me like that, I’m going to kill him and tell God he died.”
The Muse can’t help but wonder, where’s the outrage? When Teresa Heinz-Kerry takes on a heckler, or Susan Sarandon flashes a peace sign, the media go into full lather. But a bogus Bible-banger incites his congregation with talk of murder and we hear nothing.
This clown operates a multi-million dollar profit machine under the guise of God. That in itself is amazing, considering he was forced to resign his ministry in 1988 due to a prostitution scandal.
Now the resurrected Swaggart is back, and he’s appealing to the worst instincts of the worst among us.
Kudos to the AP for dogging him on this issue. He told a reporter that “If it’s an insult, I certainly didn’t think it was, but if they are offended, then I certainly offer an apology.”
It’s pathetic. Does anyone remember the murder of Matthew Shepard–the misguided college kid who got beaten and strung up on a fence in Wyoming because he looked at rednecks in a bar? Yeah Jimbo, my guess is that if he was alive today he might be offended.
Memo to Jimmy and everyone that believes the Ten Commandments ought to be enshrined on every courthouse’s steps: read the fifth one. I believe it says something about “thou shall not kill.”Return to latest entry
